Sora sat at a booth of Spice Heights, tea in hand. She always enjoyed coming to the restaurant with its loud smells and large windows. She’d liked it even before she knew it housed the headquarters of the Guardian Force under its floors. As she waited, she listened to the soft murmurs of people chatting and the harsher growls and screeches of traffic driving by. Her eyes darted over the faces of those walking past, wondering which one of them was Commander Watanabe. The man with a long, gray beard seemed wise enough to be the commander. The guy in a baseball cap and jeans was reserved enough to be. The broad-shouldered man in a suit was busy enough to be. But all walked by the restaurant, heading to places Sora would never go, seeing people Sora would never know. The thought made Sora restless. She began to regret insisting she came by herself. But she’d wanted to prove she could take over the family’s affairs by herself. Her parents were having a hard time relinquishing control of their various enterprises, but Sora argued that as the sole heiress, she’d have to learn how to handle them eventually. Sora glanced at her watch to see if Commander Watanabe was late yet, but it was still early. The minutes were dragging their feet as they passed. Sora’s eyes finally settled on a pair of robins on the other side of the window, hopping around in a bit of sidewalk landscaping. She was too busy watching them fly away to notice the figure approach her.

Despite being open for a little over two years, Spice Heights had really taken off. Of course, it was partly because of the previous benefactor of Guardian Force that Spice Heights had gotten its first couple customers. But its popularity only rose from there, which led to two renovations to accommodate for the growing number of mouths to feed.
Its main reason for success was the casually dressed red-haired man in a spice-stained apron, walking around the restaurant with plentiful dishes in each hand. At first glance, one would assume he's just a typical university student working at the place as a waiter. What one wouldn't know is that he is, in fact, the very owner and creator of the restaurant. That, and he was also the Combat Commander of the Guardian Force; the very same who is in charge of all the members in the Combat division. The aptly named "King of Fire," Watanabe Murai.
Of course, no one knows any of this. Few people know he's the owner of the restaurant and even fewer know of his involvement with the Guardian Force. Only three people know of his true identity as commander and he plans on keeping it that way.
As Murai happily served the customers with a big grin, his eyes wandered and landed on one Sada Sora. While he placed the last of his dishes down, he still looked at Sada as something started to tug at his mind. Before he knew it, he was walking towards her. When he got his mind in check, it was already too late as he was standing in front of Sada. Not wanting to seem like a total creep (at least in his mind), he took the seat opposite of Sada's and sighed deeply. "Haaaa... Sorry, I just need to take a breather... I hope I'm not bothering you or anything..."

Sora was distracted from the sky by the shadow of some college kid waiter standing in front of her. He wore a dirty apron and hair that so bright it was almost unnatural. Definitely not the commander. There was no means for Sora to further identify him however; no helpful nametag was visible on his person. Before Sora could think of something to say, he slid into the booth across from her. This struck Sora as a bit odd, but who was she to judge social peculiarities?
“Haaaa… Sorry, I just need to take a breather… I hope I’m not bothering you or anything…” Sora smiled. She was getting bored and the birds were gone; some company would be appreciated. She hoped he wouldn’t get in trouble for chatting with her during his shift though; he seemed nice enough. If her mother knew she was talking to some strange boy, she’d have a heart attack. "You’re not bothering me at all," she said, "it must be fun having a job, something to do all day. I’m Sora.”

Murai's mind started running at a million miles per hour when Sora introduced herself. Things began clicking left and right as he soon remembered what today was. He was supposed to meet up with the previous benefactor's daughter to get her well acquainted and informed of the base here underneath Spice Heights. The very same one who he had somehow protected all those years ago and haven't seen since then. While he mentally cursed his forgetfulness, he kept up a calm front, grinning, albeit slightly strained. "I-Is that so?"
Thankfully, one of his workers saved him from a heap of embarrassment as he came over with a tray of food. "I was looking for you, boss." Murai looked up and silently thanked the heavens before turning to the waiter. "Yo! What's up man?" The said waiter just shook his head with a small smirk before speaking again. "You said you wanted us to make you lunch for two. Something about today being an important day? Don't tell me you forgot again, boss." Murai pouted and huffed, crossing his arms and looking away from the worker. "Hmph. So what if I did?" The worker just chuckled and put plates of food on the table Murai was sitting at.
Once the food was set, the waiter made a short bow and left. The food laid across the table was pretty much all red. Murai paid no mind to it though, since he was used to the sight of it. Instead, he put an elbow on the table and tucked his chin on his palm, grinning widely. "I hope you enjoy your food. To be honest, all this is way too mild for me." He took a spoon from the table and was about to scoop up some soup until he remembered he was supposed to introduce himself. He laid the spoon next to his bowl of soup and nervously chuckled, scratching the back of his head. "Jeez... Where are my manners? My name's Watanabe Murai. It's a pleasure seeing you again, Sora-hime."

“I-is that so?”
“I was looking for you, boss,” a man said, stopping by their table. For a moment, Sora thought he was speaking to her and she tensed before the bright-haired man across from her answered.
“Yo! What’s up my man?” he asked. Sora watched with mild bemusement as the waiter pointed out that his boss had forgotten something. Sora’s father never forgot anything and it made life rather dull. Everything was planned and everything ran smoothly; even when it didn’t, it did.
Once the waiter left, the boss leaned toward Sora, commenting that the food was too mild for him, which made Sora smile. Her mother hated spicy foods so Sora hadn’t understood the difference between mild and hot until two years ago, when Spice Heights had opened up. She’d never consider the food mild because she’d never had anything hotter.
“Jeez… Where are my manners? My name’s Watanabe Murai. It’s a pleasure seeing you again, Sora-hime.” Now it was Sora’s turn to miss a beat.
“Really?” she asked, “You’re Commander Murai? I would never have guessed. I mean- hi.” She realized how stupid this sounded and giggled to hide it. Realizing the giggle sounded even stupider, she stopped and looked down at her soup, her dark hair falling over her shoulder. Maybe things going smoothly all the time wasn’t that bad. She could barely remember why she’d come there that day.
“I guess I was just wondering why we need a Guardian Force anymore. I’m sure it made sense at first, but now… I don’t know. What’s the point of it anymore? It’s just that, it’s purpose was for keeping the peace, but nothing’s ever happened- at least not to my knowledge- where such a large force as ours would be needed. Do you think it’s time we started downsizing; letting the government to its job?”

Murai feigned a hurt expression, clutching his left chest. "Ah, madame... Your words wound me." When he heard Sora giggle, he let out a small chuckle and put both elbows on the table. "But in all seriousness, I am the Combat Commander. But I'd rather you keep that a secret. You're probably..." As Murai trailed off, he looked up at the ceiling with a pensive look on his face. After a few moments, he looked back at Sora and grinned. "You're the fifth person to know my true identity."
There was a rather stifling silence after that. Sora then began giving her two cents on the Guardian Force and Murai listened intently, looking carefully at her facial expression. When she finished, Murai sighed deeply and scratched his head. "Well... It's true that it's gotten more peaceful now that humans and mutants are beginning to cooperate with each other. However, there are still plenty of people out there who think mutants are just freaks of nature." He lowered his eyes and glanced off to the side as he continued speaking. "There are plenty of people out there who wouldn't think twice before harming a mutant. Some would even go as far as killing them..." Murai closed his eyes and breathed deeply before speaking again. "And that's exactly what I... What we intend to prevent with the Guardian Force."
By this time, he opened his eyes and gazed at Sora with determination. "You, being the new benefactor of Guardian Force, can control the money being spent on the organization. If you want to reduce the size of our forces, so be it. However, I'd like to request we keep all our current bases. We can take out the tech and turn some of them into shelters for mistreated mutants."
Before Murai could continue, his stomach grumbled rather loudly. He remained silent and stoic for a moment, trying to hold in the embarrassment he was feeling before speaking again. "...We can talk about this another time. For now, let's enjoy the food, Sora-hime." Without hesitation, Murai began wolfing through the food on his half of the table, proper etiquette be damned.

Sora hadn’t been expecting this. She’d been expecting the unreasonableness of her parents, but he’d actually listened. And as he’d spoken, he’d looked so tired, so sad. It was so different from the relaxed, joking boy of moments ago. When he spoke of humans who wouldn’t mind killing a Mutant, she glanced around, wondering if any such were near. For the first time in Sora’s memory (besides one horror movie her mother still didn’t know she’d went to), she felt scared.
She almost jumped when his stomach growled. His face remained serious, though the slightest of blushes was forming.
“We can talk about this another time. For now, let’s enjoy the food, Sora-hime.” As he shoveled uncouth mouthfuls of soup, Sora couldn’t help but smile. She was beginning to realize she’d never met someone real before. But there was a first time for everything.
After the meal was over- Murai’s napkin in a crumpled heap next to his plate, Sora’s folded neatly unconsciously- conversation recommenced.
“I was hoping to have a chance to see the headquarters,” Sora said. She’d been looking forward to touring the secret center of Guardian Force for weeks. Her heart sank as she saw the other tables of Spice Heights were still mostly occupied, “but I don’t want to keep you away if you’re needed up here. I could come back another day...”

Needless to say, Murai was quite content after the meal. Though it was nowhere near as spicy as he had wanted it to be, good food was good food. He pat his stomach and had a carefree smile as he leaned back on his chair. A rather huge belch was threatening to escape from his mouth, but it was repressed when he remembered Sora was in his presence. Instead, he let out a happy sigh. "Ahhh... Nothing like a good meal to start the day!"
Just as Murai was about to yawn, Sora mentioned that she wanted to see the HQ. He stifled the yawn and made a small smile, waving away what she said about taking up his time. "Not to worry, my workers here can handle it. C'mon, follow me." When he got up, he stretched for a bit before walking towards the kitchen. When he opened the doors, all the chefs and waiters in there greeted Murai warmly. "Hey guys, keep up the good work!"
He motioned Sora to follow him as he made his way to his office. When he opened the door, he was greeted by the sight of his packed, but orderly desk. There was a fancy swirly chair behind it, as well as three bookshelves; some of its crevices held books, while others held spices and other oddities. There was also a rather beat-up filing cabinet. He walked on over to his desk and sat down on the chair behind it. There were a few other chairs in front of him and he motioned her to sit down. When she sat down, he gestured to his office. "Nice office, eh? Now... If you ever want access to the base, you're gonna have to come here. There are other areas to get to this underground base, but this is the quickest."
He looked around his desk and moved a handmade clock to the side, revealing a small, almost unnoticeable bump on the table. He pressed down on the bump and cleared his throat. "Codename: Fire King. Override code, 071 Mu Alpha Gamma." A moment passed before the middle bookshelf sank to the ground, as well as part of the wall, revealing a metal door. The door then slid up, showing a almost completely white interior. He got up and waved Sora over as he got in the space that opened up.
When both of them were inside, the metal door shut and the sound of the bookshelf rising up was heard from inside. Suddenly, the white room went down. This lasted for a couple more seconds before it slowed and eventually came to a stop. When the door opened, they were in another office, only this one was a lot grander and a tad more colorful with reds, browns, white...
Murai walked out of the elevator and went around the desk. He reached the other side of the room, the top half pretty much all glass. He waited until Sora was next to him and looking out the glass before he spoke again. "Welcome to the Guardian Force Underground HQ."

Sora followed the commander through the kitchen, into his office, and into the secret elevator, which may have been one of the coolest things Sora had ever seen in her life.
This opened to Watanabe’s second office, filled with warmth from the color choices. Sora resisted the urge to rush to the window wall and walked at a calmer, more regal pace. Watanabe, with his tall strides, beat Sora to the windows. Sora hadn’t realized when the were sitting but he was more than half a foot taller than her.
“Welcome to the Guardian Force Underground HQ,” he said, pride in his voice. Sora’s eyes widened. The office was set above the main room of the headquarters, so Sora looked down on a floor about as big as a football field. She’d never seen so many busy people all in one place. They scurried around, hammering away at computers or marching about like wound up toy soldiers. Sora imagined she could stand there for ages, just watching the people buzz about. A few pointed up at Watanabe and Sora waved at them. They saluted and got back to business.
“How do you do it?” she murmured, “how do you keep track of everything down here and up there?” She moved to put her hand on the glass then pulled back, not wanting to smudge it. Sora turned to Watanabe.
“This is amazing, I mean- that is what I mean. This place is amazing. And they’re all doing stuff, like important stuff? This place is- can we go down? No. We’d get in the way. I wouldn’t want to do that. But- you get to be here everyday? It must be so interesting, you must be so busy.” Sora was already in love with this place. She watched as someone tripped and four different people helped the man pick up his papers. The soldiers moved as one. There was a sense of camaraderie, of unity in the chaos. It filled Sora with a biting jealously. It seemed everyone was useful, everyone had a purpose, except her. “I should go,” she said, “I’m wasting your time.”
